Eco-Friendly Nappy Information
Choosing your nappy system is mainly dependent on the following things:Choosing Your Nappy System
Convenience
CostHealth of your baby
Environmental concerns1. Convenience – disposable nappies are very convenient. However, standard disposables also contain chemicals, superabsorbent crystals, plastic – which is bad news for your baby’s skin as well as the environment. Thankfully high performing eco disposable nappies are available. However, new modern cloth nappies are also much easier to care for than the old terry towelling squares and can make nappying fun!
2. Cost – cloth nappies are cheaper! Using disposables for 2.5 years can cost more than $3,000! Cloth nappies would cost around $700.3. Health of your baby – natural fibres such as cotton and bamboo cloth nappies are more breathable and kinder to skin than the paper and plastic of disposables. Standard disposables also contain superabsorbent chemicals, perfume and have been chlorine bleached. Fortunately Bambo Nature eco-nappies are chlorine and perfume free and so are a great alternative.
4. Environmental concerns – UK Environmental Working Group has demonstrated that using cloth nappies reduces your eco footprint by as much as 40%. Standard disposables can take an estimated 400 years to biodegrade (put them in a plastic bag and add another 50 years!). Thankfully there are eco-friendly biodegradable nappies now available (they must be composted to be biodegrable).
